How to become a pyromaniac

Yep, you’re reading this right. I’m going to tell you the basic rules about becoming a pyromaniac.

First: you need a LOT of wood.
There is just no fun in burning down somebody’s house, barn or shed…Well OK, if it is a really really old barn or shed and there is nothing in it no more except spiders (burn baby burn) and it is a real sore to the eyes… maybe then you could… BUT you have to have permission from the owner…

Second: You need some fuel.
Yes I know with the fuel prices these days, you’re not gonna spill a whole gallon on a big fire, but trust me, you get GREAT satisfaction when you see that all the wood goes up in flames… well... if your still not convinced you can always use some used oil from tractors, lawnmowers, cars and scooters…

Third: You need a wheelbarrow, a shovel and a pitchfork.
In order to create a good fire that last a couple of hours you need the wheelbarrow to bring all the branches and wood to the fire. And you need the shovel and pitchfork to clean up the fire and make sure it doesn’t get too big or out of control (as in burning your house down).

And finally: You need supportive parents!
Well actually the parents are the REAL pyromaniacs but you can’t tell the neighbors, they might get scared!

In Holland you are not allowed to burn anything. We used too maybe 10 - 15 years ago but nowadays you can’t do anything anymore not even making a nice little fire in your back yard. You have to remember Holland is one third the size of Indiana and Indiana has 3.3 million people whereas Holland has 16 million. Yep…. That is why, no fires in The Netherlands…

When we finally got our visas and moved here in February of 2006. We were happily surprised that the weather was already 60 degrees Fahrenheit (the ONLY year that happend since we been here!). Me and my dad had spotted a great little house not far from where the dairy was going to be, a couple of months before we actually moved, and we had contacted the lady who owned it. She really didn’t want to rent it out but after we convinced her that we really were “nice” and “decent” people and our sweet crop farmer put in a good word for us she let us rent the house.

Now you all want to know what we did those first couple of days…. Right???

Well, we burned and burned and burned! All the leaves, all the old branches, entire threes, the half collapsed chicken coops (yes there were several) and after 2 weeks of burning stuff we had nothing to burn anymore. It was 40 acres of forest after all... took some time to clean up... The best thing was that my mom and dad had a smile on their faces from morning till evening because they felt so liberated! You could burn things here! No, the police would not show up. The neighbors wouldn’t call the fire department just because the smoke would come their way. No way! This is the land of the free!!!

Having a little fire every evening really made us feel happy and content with the huge decision of immigrating to this beautiful country. And yes every now and then we turn into little pyromaniacs again (especially when my little sister comes over from Holland), and we have ourselves a little bonfire and enjoy this immense country and eachothers company.

Leontien, that is one big bonfire! We can burn here in California also, with a burn permit of course. But even so, someone always calls 911 when they see the smoke, luckily the fire dept. already knows what's going on:)

We always see people burning stuff just after a big rain. It's the only time the wind is calm enough so we don't have grass fires.

A big bonfire is alot of fun. Have you ever tried to cook a turkey in it? My son's old boy scout troop would dig a big pit, fill it with wood and the dads would stay up and burn it all night. Then in the morning they would wrap whole turkeys in foil and cover them in the coals. By lunchtime they had a huge turkey dinner. It was the best turkey I ever ate!

I grew up in FL and we used to burn everything. We didn't have garbage service since we lived so far out in the sticks so our trash all went to the burn pit, minus recyclables and scraps that went to the pigs. I miss sitting around with the family throwing things in.
Now I live in SoCal and fire here is BAD BAD BAD! =(
Thanks for sharing your story of flaming liberation.

People used to burn old dead grass each spring to rejuvenate their lawns, years ago. It's no longer allowed. You need to have a burn permit when conditions allows to have an open fire outdoors. JB

We also can burn larger than a camp fire, with a burn permit here in WI. It keeps us all safer. We even have big bonfires, with the fire dept. at the site, for Homecomings with the high schools. It's pretty cool, mostly cardboard, tho and started with a torch, no kerosene, gasoline or old oil allowed. Rules, lots of rules, but all for a purpose.
Nice entry.

we can burn here in Texas too - just as long as it's not too dry and there's a county-wide burn ban in place. when it's been wet enough, and its a calm morning, my hubby and i will burn a brush pile, complete with mugs of coffee and a bottle of Asti Spumante - we call them "Asti burns". :)

Leontien, In California we can burn but since Crest is up on a hill in a area where we have wildfires any time of the year it seems like If I see smoke it's a little bit of a concern .But I do remember bon fires at the beach which were fun in the summer.I loved smores which I wonder if you have heard about?

I LOVE a small quiet campfire in the evenings or even in the middle of the day AND I LOVE a BIG BONFIRE when the moment calls for one and the weather conditions permit. I couldn't imagine living somewhere where it wasn't allowed.

We burn our pasture behind our house occasionally in the early spring if the wind is calm and it's not too dry. Lots of farmers burn fields around our area in early spring. I am a little bit afraid of fire, but enjoy fireplaces. Love reading about the differences in our countries. I didn't realize Holland had that many people and just a third the size of Indiana! Have a great day. ~Cheryl

No fires allowed around here where everything is super dry in the summer. But it looks like you had a lot of fun, for sure.

We can burn here too...as long we have ten or more acres. I love watching a fire...but my mother used to tell me that if I played with fire I'd wet the bed! Guess she didn't wanting me to turn into a pyromaniac! :)

I can't imagine not being able to sit around a fire at night. I guess we take way too much for granted in this country.

i have been in love with fire all my life, i like to play with matches, just strike and watch and smell them while they burn, candles whooo hooo. as a child we burned all our trash and leaves in Georgia, but now there is a no burn law there and here in Florida, i am surprised you can burn there, maybe because you are on a farm in rural. over my life time, houses have cautht on fire, 4 of them on streets near by where i was living. not all 4 in one place just houses catching on fire, i was front and center watching the whole thing. fire is very scary, to me worse than floods and earthquakes and tornado because nothing can save us from fire. but it does fascinate me but only when it is under control

We have campfires a few times a week at my house...I couldn't imagine not being able to have hotdogs and marshmallows over the fire.

Why there is something so fascinating about starting a fire? I guess there is a little pyro in all of us! :)

Oh there is nothing like a bonfire! We always do marshmallows and s'mores. Last year we even tried pickles on the fire!

Negerigeletschtempoit said...

We also have a burn spot. The dry leaves, sticks and useless stuff will be burnt, when the weather permits. We are very careful with it, though.

But, in general, we avoid it. There is always a feeling of waste, or senseless destruction, that comes with the act of burning. I particularly do not like it.

In winter, though, I do love the fireplace.

I love your little fires. Can't get too close or you'd have a cooked face. I don't know about Tennessee, cause I haven't had the urge here to burn everything; but in Nevada we had to call the fire department to get permission first, so if someone called about smoke at our location they knew the house wasn't burning down. Of course, if the house had accidently caught fire we would have been houseless as the fire department would have still been watching television through it all.

Katie Olthoff said...

Love it! And I love a good fire! We used to sit out by the firepit everynight when we lived in town (and pre-kiddos.) Now, we burn our garbage, but we have trouble keeping up because it's SOOO windy out here!

Lois Evensen said...

We gather around the grill outside and toast marshmallows. No big burns in the city where we live. We do have 2 fireplaces inside where sensitive paper (anything containing an account or bank number) is burned with the firewood. We used to pop popcorn in the fireplace, too.... Ah, yes, cool weather and the fireplace. How comfy.
