Oh Canada... Bambi Drama!

Gentlemen.
Lovely little Bambi.
The wilderness called Canada.
A big truck and stupid boys.

Those are pretty much the ingredients you need for an absolutely TERRIFIYING story!

As you probably (hopefully) have read in my previous “Oh Canada” posts, my time was pretty amazing there. I worked hard, loved the family were I stayed with, made some great friends and adored the horses. But you can’t have all good things, sometimes there are some “not so swell” experiences that you have to deal with too…

We had a day off. It was the second time I spent at Touchstone Farm and we were going to go to Edmonton, visit some cultural places AND go shopping! Yes I was wearing my incredible high heels and we were feeling pretty girly and happy.

My sweet friend had a car, nothing fancy but it drove well, played good music and got us to where we needed to go. My friend was driving and I was enjoying the beautiful view of mountains, trees, valleys and… A DEER! A fawn I think is what they are called when they are not fully grown yet..? It had the same spots a Bambi had and just looked soooo elegant and cute standing beside the road.

She was on the right side of the road, still in the grass and we could tell she was thinking about crossing, I don’t know much about deer, we don’t have many in Holland and I was just surprised that it was there in the first place, right besides the road, but my friend was telling me that deer are a pretty common sight in that area. Because of us talking about the deer and thinking about what this fawn might do, my friend slows down. Behind us is another car and it slows down too.

But on the other side of the highway, a truck (with one of those HUGE bull bars) is speeding towards us. I look at my friend and we are wondering if he is going to slow down….

He isn’t…

The deer decides to cross the highway and we breathe a breath of relief when we see the little fluff ball safe on the other side of the road in the grass.

But then it stops and turns around…

It comes back towards us. But that truck hasn’t slowed down. And at this point the deer is at exactly the same “level” as us AND the truck. The truck hits the deer while it is trying to come back to our side of the highway. In slowmotion the truck with the HUGE bull bar hits the little animal…

I close my eyes

In matters of seconds, but what looks like minutes we get hit by an incredible BANG!!! And I see the deer sliding of the windshield over the hood on top of the highway. The truck hit Bambi. Because of the force and the speed of the truck and because we were almost NOT moving at all, the impact made the animal just catapult towards us and literally got DROPPED on top of our car…

We stopped, I started bawling and my friend started crying and she was the one that saw everything because she had her eyes open all the time! We got out but were actually too amazed by what happed to really LOOK at the deer. The car behind us stopped also and two older gentlemen rushed over to us and asked us if we were all right. NO, we were not, but seeing those friendly faces helped a lot. The two older gentlemen concluded that the deer was dead.

While we were trying to get ourselfs under control, the truck had stopped too… and two young men stepped out and walked casually towards us, yapping about their "hit"...

and LAUGHING…!!!

I was bawling all right but when I saw those guys smiling, I got SOOOOO MAD! And I wasn’t the only one! My friend was equally mad! But those stupid boys with their smirks on their faces even had the audacity to ask us where we were from, what we were doing and if we wanted to go out with them later that day!!! By that time the older gentlemen had dragged the dead deer towards the side of the road and got a little upset with the younger boys too. They friendly asked the boys to leave. Which after some hesitation they did… But not after commenting on the dead deer and possibilities to get our phone numbers…

When our tears had dried up, the sweet gentlemen had checked our car and we were capable of driving again we took off towards Edmonton. The guys had convinced us that we still needed to go, to take our minds of off things and that the dead deer and stupid boys should not ruin our day.

A half an hour later we found out that there was more wrong with the car then we thought and after hosing it down at some people’s house with water, there was a LOT of blood and fluff still stuck to the car, we decided to go home, we weren’t in the shopping mood anymore and we defiantly didn’t need some “new” boy attention…

I do remember going back to the Edmonton Mall a couple of weeks later, our hosts really thought we would have fun there once we GOT there. It was indeed a pretty place to visit. And yes, when I think back about this beautiful fluff ball and those STUPID boys, I still get a little (read; a lot) bit mad…. What a couple of LOOSERS!

I hope you never hit a deer, and if you already did, I hope the deer died quick and that you walked away fine! AND that you didn’t have any Canadian boys hitting on you because they thought it would be cool to pick up a girl after they killed Bambi.

  1. oh lordy. yes, i believe hitting 'on' someone after hitting something is not exactly good timing...

  2. My Vickie truely admires your restraint. For I fear she would have given them boys a lot more than a phone number.

Oh the audacity. And then to hit on the girls who are standing there crying over poor Bambi.

Obviously sensitivity was not in their making.

I hope the rest of your trip to Canada was beautiful and memorable.

  3. At that age, I would have done as you had done. At my age now - I would have gotten their tag number and made a call to the RCMP. You girls, could have been killed. All to often young people will aim for the hit, just for the "fun" of it.

    Sad.

  4. Believe it or not, that sort of thing is not uncommon! The deer round here are often hit, despite the warning signs along the road side. As said by a previous commentator, these people class it as a point scoring event!!

These "Muppets", for that is the politest term I can give, fail to understand the seriousness of their actions. I am pleased there were no injuries to you.

  5. I have hit a deer, but not hard, and he ran off fine. It busted my headlight out though. Luckily, nothing worse happened.

I'm sorry those boys were so immature about the whole thing :-(

  6. What a sad story to relate today! A terrible accident is enough without a couple of insensitive guys adding to the grief. Before I forget, thanks for the kind words about my profile picture… you made my day! :-)

  7. I would be bawling too if I witnessed that. How traumatizing. I don't understand people like that. Have they no heart or soul?!?!? It angers me as well, but thank goodness no people were hurt.

  8. stuff like this infuriates me, and them trying to pick you up...I am glad you and your friends were not hurt, although it will be a memory you will remember forever. I live in Canada and the good do outnumber the bad. take care.

  9. Glad no one was hurt. Not a good example for young men in Canada. Don't let the few ruin you on the lot though.

  10. Oh my goodness, what a tragic tale!

  11. What jerks!
Avoiding deer on the highway (or our little twisty roads) is often not possible, but it should never be funny or a sport.

  12. That was so sad, and so irritating! I bet you wish you could have shot their tires out-- Poor little deer, and I am thankful you were not injured by boys who have no respect for life. So scary. Nice that there were some gentlemen behind you.

  13. You can add me to the list of people who would be bawling, too. Those insensitive jerks! I swear, some people don't have the brains and common sense of an ant. Whew, even reading about this event, that heppened long ago, has the steam coming out of my ears.

  14. Goodness me, some men just have terrible timing don`t they?!

  17. They have idiots everywhere.
*Hugs* ♥ I'm glad neither of you were injured.
I have hit something once while driving, while trying to miss it, and I pray that it never happens again.

  18. i'm afraid the highways here are peppered with dead deer. it's sad, but their populations keep growing. i've never known anyone who didn't slow down when they saw when though! those a--holes had to have seen your car was nearly at a stop! i can't believe their balls thinking you'd go out with them after all that. pretty low on IQ points, no doubt.

  19. What a sad story....I would hate to know the men those loser boys grew up to me. With that kind of attitude I doubt if they got much better.

  20. I hit a deer early one morning several years ago on my way to work out with my exercise buddy. I was devastated. I walked into the gym and the first people I saw were my son-in-law and my workout partner. I rushed in telling my "son" that he just had to go home that way...that I had tried to find her, but couldn't, I knew she had to be hurt... You get the idea.

Mike and Lee looked at each other. Mike looked back at me and told me she was most likely already dead.

I didn't want to hear that.

Lee came over, put his arm around me and said, "Sandi, you've just made thousands of bugs extremely happy this morning! They are going to have an eco feast!"

Mike and Lee both laughed and I took off to ride a bike in order to 1. avoid them, but 2. to work off the energy left over by the whole encounter of deer and then Mike and Lee.

Men have a warped sense of humor on something like this.

  21. Too bad the boys left with their (tiny) testicles intact.

  22. That is horrible.
Sometimes there are such jerks in the world.

I have to agree with Suz.
    Itty bitty testes!

  23. I hit a deer once. It was a similar situation with a doe on the side of the road. She suddenly jumped - right onto the hood of my car. She died, my car (a VW beetle) was totaled. Fortunately the kids and I weren't hurt but it was very traumatic. I still feel bad about that deer and wonder why she chose to jump.

  24. We had a ton of deer where I grew up and it wasn't uncommon to see them crossing the road or to see one hit on an occasion. But it was always an legitimate accident unlike the stupid Canadian boys who probably hit poor Bambi on purpose!

    What a tragic story!

  25. I hate it when I see them close to traffic.

  26. I like Debbie's comment. And I am still mad about those boys!

  27. Leontien, I have heard of stupid pick up stories but those boys take the cake! The poor deer I have never hit a deer thank goodness,Hugs Cheri

  28. Insensitive and immature are two of the nicer words that come to mind when I think of those boys. And to think they have a license to drive! Glad you didn't get hurt. The deer can do a lot of damage to vehicles as I well know. A few years ago, a huge deer ran out from nowhere in front of me and did over 5k damage to my car! They are thick in our part of the country. Even tho they are a nuisance, I hate to see them killed too. Hopefully those boys have matured some by now.

  29. It's not surprising to me anymore how many people deliberately run over an animal on the road without slowing down, of drive off the road to run them over. Sick. My sister found her cat dead in the road with swerve marks left on the pavement that clearly showed someone deliberately veared across the road to run her cat down. Very sick.

  32. Even through we have a huge population of deer and they are quite a nuisance, I hate the way some people treat them - and all animals. Do take a life and laugh about it is sick and shows complete disrespect for living things.

I'm so sorry for the baby deer and your experience with ignorance.

  33. My husband has hit a few deer over the years. Me, only one, and it did not cause any damage.

It's not a fun experience at all.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've never hit a deer and hope I never do!!! I'm such an animal lover, it would break my heart.

The boys should have been ashamed of themselves...... but..... they have no heart or mind....

    ReplyDelete
  35. It happens over here in the UK as well... a real shame.

  36. What an awful experience Leontien. I have never hit a deer, but I know that although sometimes it cannot be avoided, I would be completely crushed, and for these guys to act in such a manner....ugh!!
